Ski Resort Uphill Access Advocacy
When Skimo Northwest formed, we set out to be more than a racing organization. To truly grow the sport, skiers of all skill levels—from first-timers to seasoned racers—need accessible terrain to train, hone their skills, and connect with a like-minded community. However, confusing and inconsistent resort uphill policies often stand in the way. Skimo Northwest aims to break down these barriers by improving policy signage, strengthening resort partnerships, and building a better-informed uphill community.
Because PNW resorts operate under strict land-use permits, uphill skiing introduces safety risks while generating minimal revenue relative to their core business of lift-served skiing. As recreational users, uphill skiers must respect these constraints and follow resort rules. Good stewardship and peer accountability are essential, as resort policies ultimately dictate our access to safe, low-risk terrain. Building strong, collaborative relationships with resort management is the best way to safeguard and expand this access.
With ski mountaineering having made its Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, the sport is growing rapidly. While some resorts forbid uphill access altogether, those that permit it are taking proactive steps to accommodate this rising demand. Skimo Northwest is dedicated to driving the sport forward through three key initiatives:
Building partnerships with PNW resorts that currently restrict or forbid uphill access.
Strengthening existing relationships to refine, standardize, and sustain access policies.
Engaging the local community to advocate for safe, responsible uphill practices.
If you have uphill access concerns or want to get more involved, reach out to your local SnowGoat Skimo representative at advocacy@snowgoatskimo.com. Skimo Northwest relies on dedicated local volunteers to represent our mission at their home resorts, and we are always looking to expand our community and resort advocacy.
